What's your 'photography story'
Becoming a mom inspired me to pursue photography. Like many other moms out there with a camera I just wanted amazing pictures of my son and before you knew it I was fully obsessed with photography. I purchased my first “real” camera in 2005 and started portfolio building in 2008 and opened up my business in 2009. I’ve been in business for nearly four years now. About two years ago I decided to specialize in newborn photography and it was the best decision I could have ever made for my business. In 2013, I have photographed over 80 newborns.
Tell us about your very first shoot.
Oh boy it was a bit of a mess. It was before I actually started my business. I wanted to see if I could take portraits of more than just my son. I went outdoors with my best friends two children. It was way more challenging than I could have imagined and I came home feeling so deflated and thinking there is no way I could do this professionally. Then I downloaded the images and realized I had actually captured some really sweet moments.
What 3 words best describe your style?
My style is natural and classic yet a bit rustic.
If you were stranded on a dessert island with only one camera, lens, and accessory, what would you hope they would be?
My 5DMarkiii , 35L and my exposdisc. Can’t live without that thing for outdoor shoots.
If you could go anywhere and photograph anything, where would you go and what would you shoot?
I would go to Rome and photograph the city and amazing food.
If you could be photographed by any photographer, living or dead, who would it be?
Oh wow this is a tough one. I would love to have my family photographed by Raye Lawe. Theway she captures families is so amazingly simple yet beautiful.
What one tip would you give a photographer starting out in your field?
Take your time and enjoy the journey.
What websites/blogs do you visit often?
I’m a member of the forum Clickin’ Moms and found that site so very valuable when I was starting out.
What do you find most difficult about being a photographer?
Owning your own business is definitely a challenge. Making sure to run your business instead of having it run you is something I struggle with constantly. Especially during the busy season! However, I wouldn’t change it for anything. I thrive on being busy.
What do you find most rewarding?
I put my heart and soul into each and every session and knowing I am providing my clients (especially my newborn clients) with images that will bring them joy for so many years to come is the biggest reward I could imagine. My son is nine years old and while newborn photography was nothing like it is today we invested in a high quality photography studio to capture him at just a few weeks old. We still have the images up in our house today and I love them more now than I did nine years ago.
